Contrary to popular belief, cats don't actually groom themselves. Cats lick themselves, which really only covers them in saliva and can be a health risk for them because they swallow shedding fur, which can result in hairballs. The best way to prevent cat hairballs is to have your cat professionally groomed on a regular basis.
Why Do Cats Lick Themselves?
Adult cats spend nearly half their waking hours grooming, according to veterinarian Dr. Cynthia McManis. In an interview with Readers Digest, Canada, she details some of the many reasons cat lick themselves:
Professional Cat Grooming Can Reduce Your Allergy Symptoms.
Did you know you're not allergic to cat's fur at all? A protein in the cat's saliva, Fel d1 (Felis domesticus), is what's causing your allergic reaction. That's why shaving your cat won't help with your allergies. A regular bath, however, will wash away the saliva left on your cat's fur that's irritating your eyes and nose.
A full groom consists of a bath, blow-dry, and comb-out, plus claw clipping and ear cleaning. Regular grooming will help to prevent fur-balls and can completely prevent matting if done on a regular schedule.
But, Don't Cats Hate Water?
One of the many misconceptions about cat grooming is that cats hate water. Just like dogs and people, some love baths and some don't. I often find that a cranky cat settles down in the bathtub (just like a toddler)!
If you think about it, it's really the healthy thing to do for your cat. They walk in their litter boxes and spread saliva all over their fur. Wouldn't you prefer a clean cat?
A clean cat is a healthy cat and a healthy cat is a happy cat!
